Did you know...
The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) merged to become the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). CRB checks are now called DBS checks.

A DBS check may be needed for certain voluntary roles i.e. working with children or in healthcare etc. if you are unsure contact DBS direct. Please note you can not complete a criminal records check on yourself, but you can request a ‘basic disclosure’.

There are three types of criminal record checks Standard, Enhanced and Enhanced (with list checks). DBS checks are free to volunteers who are eligible i.e. a person who is not being paid (receives approved out of pocket expenses only i.e. travel).  An organisation must not apply for a check unless the volunteer role is eligible for one and also the volunteer applicant must be informed why they are being checked.  Remember that all DBS check applicants must be aged 16 years and over.

Always best to check the DBS website as information is updated regularly, for further guidance: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/disclosure-and-barring-service

Coffee & Chats...
We have organised and supported new Volunteer Coffee & Chats throughout Allerdale and Copeland over the past few months.  Although Coffee & Chats may already be up and running in some areas we have decided to try and run our get togethers in Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter throughout the year. Some of our get togethers are well attended and others need a little bit extra support to get up and running, but either way it is a great opportunity for all our volunteers to discuss what's happening locally and find out about new volunteering opportunities etc.  But most importantly our Coffee & Chats allows us to meet up with our friendly volunteers and have a lovely cup of tea...pictures to follow!

Welcome to our Blog...

Hello and welcome to our blog, my name is Allison Wood and I'm the Neighbourhood Care Independence Volunteer Development Manger Age UK West Cumbria.  The Neighbourhood Care Independence (NCI) Programme is supported by Cumbria County Council as part of the council's commitment to neighbourhood care.  The NCI Programme is for adults aged 18+ in Allerdale and Copeland is provided by a Partnership of 22 local voluntary organisations led by Age UK West Cumbria.

This is an interesting and exciting time for NCI and also for myself as I'm new to blogging, but fingers crossed and with great support from my colleagues in IT and yourself we will be a  success.   My aim is to link in with our 22 partners and bring you up-to-date information, photo's and details of volunteering opportunities and fourth coming events etc.

NCI has been running one year today which is great news for all persons involved..."here's to another great year!"
